One of the central promises Jesus gave to his disciples before he was crucified and resurrected was of the coming of the Holy Spirit (John 14:16-17, 26; 15:26; 16:7-8; Acts 1:4-5). For this reason, Jesus' first disciples waited in Jerusalem to "receive power from on high" on the Day of Pentecost. From that point onward, the church has always had the Holy Spirit with her to save, comfort, guide and sanctify. Generally, interest in the Holy Spirit is misguided by those who want to emphasise either "power" or "spiritual gifts" - but there is much more to know and experience about God the Holy Spirit, which is what this series is all about. Here we will discover that the Holy Spirit is God and is a distinct person from the Father and the Son. As God, he is also the co-creator of the Universe with the Father and the Son. Even though the Bible was written by humans, the Holy Spirit inspired them so that the words they wrote were God's Words. Even in the Old Testament, various institutions, laws, and figures pointed forward to the person of the Holy Spirit and his work. The work of the Spirit was most clearly seen in the earthly life of Jesus, and there Jesus promised his disciples that he would send the Spirit on them as well. On the day of Pentecost, the church received the Spirit and was enabled to proclaim the Gospel with boldness. The Spirit manifests himself in a person first by renewing their hearts (regeneration), and then in the whole course of life, making them more like Christ (sanctification). The Holy Spirit also equips the church for all she needs to serve one another and be witnesses to Christ. Finally, the Spirit preserves believers until they reach glory, whether in their death or in the return of Christ.
