How does God rule the world? Since the creation of the world, his intention was that humanity must be co-regents with God (Gen. 2:15). Indeed, in the picture of heaven in the New Testament, we are told that Christians will rule with Christ (Rom. 8:17). But how will God govern between the first Garden (in Genesis) and the New Heavens (in Revelation)? The answer: God rules by his providential care over history, through his guiding hand in history, and through sending angels and performing miracles. Specifically, over his covenant people in the Old Testament, he reigned through priests and prophets. But if he were to appoint a king over Israel, what should that king look like? What should his character be? The book of 1 & 2 Samuel provides the answer through the stark contrast between Saul and David. The church and the world can learn much from these ancient pages and how they ultimately point us to the true king in the line of David, Jesus the Messiah.
