"Justification by faith is the article of the standing or falling of the church" -- this was how important the Reformers of the 16th century esteemed this aspect of our salvation -- one's belief about it reflects whether the church is standing in truth or fallen into a false gospel. In the larger picture of Scripture we discover that in God's act of justifying sinners by His grace, he simultaneously vindicates His own righteousness, as well as vindicating His Son in the act of the resurrection. Justification by faith alone can only be true if Jesus' death was in our place, bearing our penalty (penal substitutionary) since there God demonstrates His justice toward the penalty of sin and His grace toward sinners. This status of being declared righteous in God's sight (forensic justification) even though we are not inwardly righteous is on the basis of the work of Christ and received by us through faith alone. The result of this faith is that we are clothed in Christ's righteousness (imputation) which He accomplished in his perfect life (active obedience) and sacrificial death (passive obedience). In light of this justification we can have the assurance of salvation that as long as we trust in Christ for our right standing with God, we have that right standing with God. This faith by which we trust Christ is a living faith, and since a new heart (regeneration) precedes faith, this faith leads to a transformed life of sanctification from grace to grace. Therefore, after 500 years, we are still protesting against the Roman Catholic Church on justification since we believe it is by grace alone through faith alone.
