One of the main ways the Apostle Paul explains salvation is in terms of the believer being "in Christ". This union with Christ is not merely the result of Christ's incarnation, where God the Son takes on flesh (as the Eastern Orthodox believes), rather it is the result of God's saving grace from which flows all the benefits of justification, sanctification, and glorification. Several metaphors are used to explain this union: it is like a branch in the vine (John 15:5), the marriage union between a husband and wife (Ephesians 5:32), the head and the body (Colossians 1:18), and a building with a foundation (Ephesians 2:20). Throughout the New Testament, we see that before we had union with Christ, he had and has a much deeper union with his Father (John 10:30); before we had union with Christ, we had union with Adam in common humanity and sin nature (Romans 5:12-20); by union with Christ we have every spiritual blessing by being seated with Christ in the heavenly realm (Ephesians 1:3-14); by union with Christ we have justification (Romans 5:18-19), sanctification (Romans 8:1-17), the basis of the pursuit of holiness (1 Corinthians 6:12-20), the basis of Christian unity with one another (John 17:21). and our future bodily resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:12-24). To understand and live within the reality of union with Christ is essential for every Christian.
